Chatting in English for Pay on Cambly: A Plain Guide
If you enjoy a good conversation, there is a website that pays for exactly that. Cambly connects English learners around the world with native English speakers for one-on-one video chats. Many learners don’t want grammar drills. They want to practice talking with a real person.
What the work looks like
You log in from your computer, turn on your camera and talk with a student. Cambly says no teaching certificate, college degree or teaching experience is needed. Cambly’s help center says tutors must keep their camera on during lessons. There is no audio-only option.
There are no minimum hours. You choose when to be available.
What it pays
As of October 2026, Cambly’s help center lists these rates:
- Regular lessons: $0.17 per minute, which works out to $10.20 per hour.
- Cambly Kids (students aged 4 to 17): $0.20 per minute, or $12.00 per hour.
You are paid only for lesson minutes, not for time spent waiting. Payments go out on Tuesdays through PayPal or Stripe, once your balance reaches at least $20 after fees. Tutors work as independent contractors, not employees. Results vary a great deal with how often students book you.
As a rough estimate, about two hours of lessons a month could cover a $15 to $20 streaming plan, before taxes.
Two things to check first
Cambly says it does not allow tutoring from California, Massachusetts or New Jersey. It also says it is limiting how many new tutors it accepts right now, so a review can take a while.
How to apply, step by step
- Go to cambly.com and look for the link to become a tutor.
- Create an account with your email address.
- Run the connection test, which checks your camera, microphone and internet.
- Fill in every part of your profile. The form will not submit if a section is blank.
- Record a short introduction video, between one and three minutes. Smile, speak clearly and say a little about what you like to talk about.
- Submit your profile and wait for Cambly’s review.
Taxes and benefits
Tutoring money is usually taxable. The IRS says you generally must file if your net self-employment earnings were $400 or more. If you are under full retirement age and receive Social Security, earnings over a yearly limit ($24,480 in 2026) can reduce your benefits for a time. SSI, Medicaid and housing help count income in their own ways. This is general information only, so check your own situation with the Social Security Administration and the IRS.
One safety note: real tutoring sites never ask you to pay to get work. The FTC calls paying for the promise of a job a sign of a scam.
